HOW TO BUILD A SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Installing an underground sprinkler system is a do-it-yourself project that can save the cost of a professional installation. Sprinkler components available today are easy to work with and a cost-effective method for maintaining a lush, green lawn and flower beds. As with any project, good planning will save you time, effort and money.

Step 1

Choose the appropriate sprinkler heads to cover your zone, using pop-up, impulse or gear driven heads for wide grassy areas, shrub heads or bubblers for shrubs and flowers, and fixed pop-up heads for areas next to buildings or paved areas like driveways.

Step 2

Measure the area that you would like to use for your sprinkler system. Bury the system in the ground 30cm deep and cover it with soil so that
it is sturdy. Take note of any corners in the sprinkler system. Attach the snap-on to the tap connector, measure from tap to irrigation elbow at the bottom of the trench. Attach the snap-on to the tap and measure to cut the pipe. Connect the elbow to the pipe and snap-on.

Step 3

Measure the distance from the elbow to where you would like your first pop-up sprinkler. Attach the pipe to the irrigation elbow and full flow male adaptor. Connect the pop-up sprinkler to the adaptor and make sure it is just under the ground surface. When using a riser sprayer follow the same steps as above but use a full flow female adaptor.

Step 4

Measure and cut the pipe for the second sprinkler according to the nozzle size you will be using. Make sure the sprinklers are not too far apart for it will create dry areas. Make sure you don’t put to many sprinklers on one line, it will have an impact on the pressure and the sprinkler’s performance. Rather create an additional line.

Step 5

Carry on until you come to the end of your sprinkler system.

Step 6

When you have reached the end of the sprinkler system you have two options, use the full flow elbow and attach the pipe, adaptor and nozzle as previously or you may use the stop end.
